AIM-ing for a name

When Entergy shut down the town's power last night, Emily crawled into bed with me and my wife.  She brought her stuffed penguin, "Pengy" with her.  My wife asked how the penguin got its name.

Emily said, "In the book, Clementine, the girl names her stuffed animals by going into the bathroom and reading words.  She named on animal, 'Moisturizer.' So, I went into our bathroom to try find a name for my penguin. I was gonna name it 'AIM' because we don't have a lot of words in our bathroom."

We're glad she chose "Pengy." :-)

Even in dreams, @taylorswift13 is a great person

I had a dream my 9yr old got to meet Taylor Swift before a concert. We were in the parking lot sitting in the car.  Emily had got out to take pictures of the arena or something.  Taylor was walking the lot, shaking hands, talking, giving autographs, hugging fans, etc.  She was wearing some kind of plain t-shirt dress thing - nothing fancy or anything, just 'hang-out' clothes. I watched as she came up behind Emily and stood without saying a word, to surprise her. When Em turned around, she was awestruck and couldn't speak.  When Taylor reached out to hug her, Emily started crying and pulled away to get back to the car.

"Emily, that is Taylor Swift, honey! You're one of her biggest fans," I said, trying to calm her down.  Taylor knelt down beside the car and talked to Emily as if they had been friends for years.  She asked what Emily's favorite song was, what other kinds of music did she like, where did we live, and on for what seemed like 30 minutes in the dream.  Once Em was calmed down, Taylor went on to meet and greet other fans.

As often happens in dreams, time suddenly fades forward.  Now, it is just moments before they start letting fans into the arena.  Taylor comes into the parking lot, heads straight for our car, and calls out to Emily.

"Hey, girl, do you see this dress?" She was wearing a big, red flowing dress.  She twirled around once and it flitted and furled around her ankles.  She was genuinely excited, a big smile on her face that was both a happy grin and a look of disbelief - the same we often get when we wake up on Christmas morning to find we actually got the "ONE THING" we really, really wanted.

"It's the one from the video! Can you believe it!?" Taylor said, twirling around again. Evidently, she had not been expecting to wear it or something.  Emily jumped out of the car, eyes as wide as half dollars and wearing a smile that stretched the width of her face.

"I love it!" She yelled as she ran to Taylor and they hugged.  Suddenly, Taylor pulled a guitar out (from who knows where, it was a dream after all), signed it and handed it to Emily.  They hugged again and Taylor ran off to get ready for the show.  As Emily turned back to show me the guitar, I woke up.

I don't normally put my dreams on here, mainly because they tend to very, very wild or weird (which actually might be a reason *to* put them on here).  But, I thought this one was worth sharing.  It's not often that my dreams focus on my little girl.  And in this case, it even starred one of her heroes, who turned out be just as amazing in dreams as she is in real life (from what I've seen, haven't met her yet in person).

Emily's Christmas Story

Emily has been studying "-ing" words this week in school.  She decided to write a Christmas story using all of her -ing spelling words.  She had me scan it in so she could share printouts with us.  I took the liberty of posting the story here (click on images to enlarge):

Daily Photo (Curves - Emily and her Zhu-Zhu)

Today's challenge: Curves
Emily wanted my picture for today to be her new Zhu Zhu pet, Mr. Squiggles.  She bought him with her own money that she has save since Christmas.  Actually, I think she's been saving money since her last birthday.  She tends to be very thrifty with her money.

I purposely left the lighting as you see it.  Depending on your personal viewing style, you either start with the large dark area and shift your focus to Emily then to the toy *or* you see the bright toy and move toward the right.  And, yes, in some cases, you may be the type that sees Emily first and then lets the eyes wander around.  What I hoped to achieve with "curves" as the theme is that the round toy leads to Em's round face, and the roundness stands out against a dark background.

Stephen asked me where I get my challenge ideas.  Most of my photos have been just pictures I wanted to post.  But, I also get ideas (especially for the 'challenge' part) from www.dailyshoot.com, though I do not submit my entries to them.  I don't because they have photo sites they like to use and I just insert my pics into my posts.  I suppose I could jet over to Picasaweb where Blogger stores photos and get the link to the pictures and add them to the DailyShoot site, but really, that's a bit much work for me. :-)  I have other random things I must get out of my head!

Stackin' Up

Emily stands next to her tall tower!

After Sunday lunch, Emily decided to help Kensley (pictured behind Em) play with building blocks.  It wasn't long before Emily was trying to see if she could build a tower taller than she is.  It took nearly every block they had, but she finally achieved her goal!  She was very proud.

Daily Photo (Emily Does Karaoke)

Emily watches videos, sings along

This morning, Emily fired up a netbook and began pulling up her favorite singers.  She donned headphones and sang along to each song.  Included in her version of "Top 40:" Miley Cyrus "Party in the USA," Selena Gomez "Naturally," Taylor Swift "You Belong With Me" and "Fifteen," and Carrie Underwood "All-American Girl." There were others, but my memory fails to recall them.  There is nothing quite as sweet and entertaining as listening to a 7 yr old sing at the top of her lungs because she doesn't realize how loud she is with headphones on!

Daily Photo (Lookin Good, Furball!)

"Lookin' Good, Furball"

Emily asked that her kitty, wearing a pink hat, be the daily photo.  She then said, "Call it 'Lookin Good, Furball!'"  How could I resist?

Daily Photo (Fruity Effects)

Emily shows off effects of fruit roll-up

Emily asked if I had posted my daily photo for today.  I had not, so she asked if we could use her TONGUE as the picture of the day!  Well, of course we can!

Daily Photo (Emily is camera shy)

Emily hates having her picture taken... Can you tell?

This picture is one of several taken within a few minutes of each other.  At Halloween, she "borrowed" my Michael Jackson costume hat and told me to take her picture.  It's too bad I can never get her to pose for anything... I am beginning to understand why Howie G of "Dinosaurs and Rockets" fame calls her "The Divine Miss Em..." (More pictures from the 'photo shoot' are below)

Daily Photo (High Roller)

Emily at the Crystal Palace roller rink, Arkadelphia, AR

Emily went to a birthday party today at the Crystal Palace roller rink in Arkadelphia, AR.  I can't believe the place is still open after all these years.  She stopped just long enough for me to take this picture with my HTC Touch.  Though she fell often, she never, ever gave up trying.  Eventually, she got to the point where she just wanted me to walk (no skates for me!) beside her just in case she fell.  She also cannot wait to go back so that she can "really skate right!"

Why Facebook is not killing my blogging

The idea behind sites like Facebook and Twitter is that they allow you to 'microblog' - that is, write short snippets that happen throughout the day. The downside for me is that because I thoroughly enjoy Facebook, I say whatever pops in my head on there and then can't think of what it is I want to talk about over here.

I've read several articles about the death of full-fledged blogging as a means of personal communication. I don't agree that quickfire microblogging will be the death of longer blog entries. Here's why: Facebook does not let you get everything down you might wish to say, especially if the topic is a hotbed of thought and discussion. Twitter can't even come close - it only allows for 140 characters to say what you want to say.

Right now, I can update my status and say something like, "played baseball outside with Emily then busted out the weedwacker for a round of grassicide." Most likely, I will have several friends choose to 'like' my status and some may even post a response to it. But what you miss out on is the whole story behind the baseball game we played. And that is why I will continue to post here. It lets me write out long, sometimes humorous, ramblings that I am hoping someone out there reads. then again, if no one does, well, I know I posted it for me so that I can look back on it later and amuse myself.

So, for your enjoyment, here is what baseball in the front yard is like:

Emily comes into the living room from the playroom. She is carrying a plastic, oversized golf club, a beanbag-style fuzzy toy baseball, and a faux leather glove with velcro in it to aide with catching the ball. "Do you want to play inside or outside," she asks, not giving the choice of whether or not I *want* to play, but *where* to play.

Before we head outside, I suggest that we might want to use her t-ball bat and ball instead of the golf club. We look through the playroom for the ball, but cannot find one. We head outside to the storage shed to get her pink t-ball bat and to see if there were any balls we could use. While we did not find any, we did find plenty of spiders, webs, and ants. Once we were done playing wild kingdom, we settled on using the squishy ball with the t-ball bat.

When we set up to play, I told Emily to go get the play bases from the house so we could run the bases when we hit the ball. What I neglected to pay any attention to was the temperature outside. It was hot. Not just hot, but also very still. We hadn't even begun yet, and already I was starting to sweat. This was not good.

Emily brings the bases outside and I step off a compact baseball diamond. Emily is up to bat first. She does not like to play with "ghost runners" so the game is played such that the pitcher returns to the mound and the runner tries to outwit the pitcher in order to run to the next base. Each team either has to score 5 runs in an inning or get three outs before the other team can bat.

Did I mention it was hot? After two at-bats, the front of my shirt was showing the signs and I could feel beads of sweat starting to roll down my back. Emily had scored two runs and I had chased her around the bases the whole time. She hasn't picked up a bat since t-ball, and she did great. I did manage to get her out three times, but not before she scored four runs.

I did not fair so well. Between trying to hit the wild pitches she hurled at me, by me, and near me, and running my out-of-shape self around the bases when I did manage to get a hit, I felt like I was going to fall over any minute! Emily, on the other hand, was having a blast - giggling, running around, chasing me.

She won the game, having scored five runs in the next two innings. A few of the runs were my 'helping her' by doing things like dropping the ball, throwing the ball away from the play, etc. But, most of the runs were my own inability to catch the girl. She is fast, heat or no heat! I called the game after three innings so I could break out the weedeater and finish the yard work. I told her to get her brother and tell him I said they needed to play baseball together. I'm not sure how that went, but after I was done with yard work, Emily wanted to come in and get cleaned off.

I was for that!

You keep me hangin' on...

Emily's birthday on the 14th went very, very well! Here are a few pics from the party:

On Thursday, Emily invited Sarah and Maggie to sleep over. While they were here, the girls played Barbies, made their own bobblehead dogs, and at one point ran around the house singing, "We're Hyper! We're Hyper!"

A while ago, woot.com had a birthday giveaway - WootLights! I ordered a set, and they came today:

Aren't you glad you came by?

Random Pictures

I don't know why, but I love taking various pictures of my Indians collectibles. In this case, that also includes Steelers, Coke, and Mickey Mouse.

I was chasing Tyler around with the camera. He finally surprised me by turning around and 'shooting me!'

Emily was playing around in her room when I snapped this one. I have no idea what was going through her mind at the time...

And, here is a 'so-close' moment from one of Emily's ballgames. It may look like it's a tie, but the fielder got there just before I snapped the picture... Dang it!

For the record: How is it that the Blogger dictionary does NOT know the word "Steelers!?!?!" HELLO!!!!

Memorial Day

Those are the grilled pineapples I made for our Memorial Day cookout. They were okay, but something was a little off. I've never made them like this before, so I won't know until next time what's off... My recipe went something like this:

1 - medium-to-large pineapple, cut into half-inch or 3/4-inch thick rings (or something akin to rings) and decored (or whatever the culinary term is)

1 TBSP - Lemon Juice
2 TBSP - Honey
3 TBSP - Brown Sugar
1 dash - Cinnamon

1 gallon-sized zippered baggie

Mix the ingredients together for the glaze to get a nice consistency. Shouldn't be too runny, but not molasses either. If too thick, add a little lemon juice at a time. If too runny, add your flavor of choice (I prefer brown sugar!).

Baste each side of each pineapple ring, and do the edges. Heck, do the middle of the ring while you're at it! Place each ring into the baggie as you are done with it. When you have basted all the rings, pour the remaining glaze into the baggie and gently massage it throughout the baggie over as many of the rings as you can. Lay the baggie flat on a fridge shelf. Let the rings marinate for about 15-20 minutes in the refrigerator, then turn the baggie over for another 15-20 minutes.

Remove the baggie from the fridge and lay each slice on a medium-heat grill. If you prefer, you can lightly spray non-stick oil on the racks (before you light the grill), but I prefer to just stick 'em on there and go for it. You can also use the juice in the baggie as a baste while you are cooking the slices.

Cook each side for NO MORE than 4 minutes, then flip the slices over and do the other side (again, NO MORE than 4 minutes). This will give nice grill marks without overcooking the slices.

Enjoy! (I saved the top for decoration - yeah, I've been watching too much Food Network!)
