Tech Support, Teaching, A Class Reunion, and Fun in the Sun

So this is what happens when I take a few days off from updating things - I suddenly find myself with four days' worth of posts all wrapped into one.  Such is the life of an inconsistent, jack-of-many-trades blogger.

Before I get into everything, I want to thank those of you that have taken the plunge and bought a copy of my book (or who have expressed interest in picking up a copy).  I really appreciate it more than I can express, but I'll try anyway because it means that much.  The stories in the book  - ("All This Digging" - see the image over there on the right?  Feel free to click on it. (Yeah, shameless plug, what I can say?) Feel free to check out  the preview.) - are much like most of my posts: not necessarily connected to each other, and not quite like reading the same thing twice.  I know it's hard to get a feel for what to expect when presented with a short excerpt of one story, and because of a suggestion from a fellow techie, I expanded the preview on LuLu.com to show you a taste of several different stories.  I have to admit, it is still weird when someone comes up to me and says, "Hey, I bought (or "am going to buy") your book..."  It is very humbling knowing how many friends, family, and other supporters are out there reading what *I* wrote.  Thank you all very much!  I also want you to feel free to review, critique, etc the book and let me know about it - good, bad, or ugly.  And if you review it online, send me the link and I'll post it (or if you send me the review with permission to reproduce it as a post, I can do that too!) on here.  Just another way for me to say "Thanks."

I know that not all the stories in the collection are going to appeal to everyone.  Some readers may find the story "All This Digging" a little too dark while finding "Forgiven" a little too "preachy."  Frankly, that's one of the things I liked about putting the collection together in the first place - (to borrow from the theme song) different strokes for different folks.  I also know that "short stories" and "short short stories" are not widely read these days.  So, I deeply appreciate those of you that are even THINKING of picking up the book.

I received a call the other day from someone needing help with their computer.  The computer was "extremely loud" after a few minutes of use, plus it would lock up or reboot at random times.  In techie terms, it sounded to me like this computer was overheating.  Those symptoms are textbook for a system that has too much dust, dirt, and other gunk inside the case.  So, I told the person to bring then computer to my place and I'd look at it.  I hooked it up, turned it on, and sure enough the thing started screaming within a few minutes.  I disconnected the wires and opened the case.  Inside, a coating of dust, dirt, and something I could not quite identify, covered everything.  I took the canned air and blew out what I could.  Unfortunately, the "gunk" would not come off easily.  The thick, black, fuzzy substance stuck to chips, the main CPU fan, and just about everything else inside the computer.  Using cotton swabs, paper towels, and the canner air, I was able to get things back in operation.

Afterward, the person said, "That was probably nicotine, huh?"  I said that it could have been a combination of that and dust in general.  But, that person knew the right thing - cigarettes are one of a computer's worst enemies.  Have you seen the images of what smoking does to one's lungs?  Well, it does the same thing to your electronics - computers, cell phones, TV's, stereo equipment, iPods, you name it.

So, how do you clean out your computer?  Ideally, leave it to someone that knows what they are doing.  Short of that, though, most computers have either a latch that keeps the cover on or a couple screws in the back along the edge that keeps the cover in place.  Once the screws are removed on one side of the computer, the side of the case should slide open.  Once the side is removed, you can use a can of compressed air to blow out the dust bunnies living inside.  I recommend you do this OUTSIDE of your house. :-)  Two things you NEVER want to use inside your computer: water and a vacuum cleaner.

Seriously. Do NOT spray water into your computer trying to clean it.  Water will cause everything (or at least enough things) to short out.  We are talking electronics here!  Some of you may be laughing right now, but I have been asked PERSONALLY by someone who wanted to just "wash out" their computer.  Please, do NOT use water - no matter how gunked up things are!

Vacuum cleaners are also a no-no!  Why?  Because when you run the vacuum, it builds up a HUGE amount of static electricity.  Well, if you take that static electricity and touch sensitive electronic parts and that static discharges, it can fry those sensitive electronics inside your computer!  They do make "electronics-friendly" vacuums, though, so you could buy one of those at Best Buy or online if you want to.

But, as I said when I started this, ideally you should leave cleaning the inside of your computer up to someone you trust to service your computer.  Just don't be fooled into playing a lot for it, though.  Seriously, no more than 20 bucks for a thorough cleaning.

On Saturday, I worked with 28 teachers.  They learned about project-based learning and how to incororpate "PBL" in their classrooms.  The teachers are part of a program in Arkansas in which people with degrees outside of education can become licensed teachers.  Honestly, I don't know why anyone would do such a thing, but then again, I do not have whatever teachers have inside them that makes them want to spend all day with a roomful of kids.  I have two kids.  I can barely handle that.  I digress.

One of the participants had been recently badly, BADLY burned in an accident.  She got one of her friends to hook up a video camera and we used Skype (http://www.skype.com/) so that she could attend from her house!  It was very cool.  The people in the class got a kick out of it, and everyone had a chance to talk to the recovering teacher.  After each teacher gave an update about their classroom, the Skped-in participant was able to share her updates.  It was a hands-on demonstration of using technology in order to keep homebound individuals connected to the classroom.  Think "pandemic."

What is "project-based learning?"  Ah, that is something I'll share in another post.  Of course, a simple web search will net you a LOT of information about such things.  But, I will be sharing more about it in an upcoming post.

While I was teaching on Saturday, Shan and her classmates held their 20th anniversary class reunion picnic at White Oak Lake.  Shan said they had a lot of fun.  Emily and Tyler (along with other kids) rented pedal boats and tooled around the lake.  The picnic was a chance for classmates to catch up, hang out, and have fun.

Saturday evening, there was a supper/dance held and a lot of people showed up for that.  Shan figured up about half the class had come and many had brought someone with them.  It was a good crowd there with a DJ.  Now, I like my music loud.  I love jamming out and sharing it with the world.  BUT, this guy was playing in a gym-sized room with cinder block walls.  He was also plahinng louder than I have heard from some concerts I've been to.  It is way too loud when you can't even shout at the person next to you and have them hear you.  Keith (a friend) thought ahead and brought ear plugs.  I will be sure that ear plugs will be in my equipment list for the 25th reunion. :-)

Aside from that, though, it was fun watching everyone dance and have a good time!

Speaking of a good time, our church held "Family Day" today (Sunday)!  The deacons and their wives (and I assume some other folks as well) got together and had a cookout with hot dogs and burgers, plus chili and "fixins" which was followed up with all kinds of desserts (pies, cakes, brownies, things I didnt know what they were but I ate them anyway!).

In the parking lot, they had two LARGE air-filled jumpies - one was a mega slide and the other was Jurassic Adventure.  If that wasn't enough, they also brought in a rock wall for the kids to play on!  It was a lot of fun!  Emily played on the Jurassic Adventure and tried to help Kensley play, but I think Kensley was a bit too small for all the jumping around going on there. She didn't take long to decide to get off, but Emily stayed and played.  Then Emily went up on the big slide.

Being Random Again

Yeah, it's got a HEMI...

I have about a year left of payments on my truck, and I am hoping that this becomes the first vehicle that I not only pay off, but that sticks around long afterward. Since it has reached the 100,000-mile mark, my primary goal is to take it in and have all the belts, hoses, spark plugs, etc checked out and replaced as needed. It's been running great for 100k, I'd like to see it reach 200+ before it reaches its final resting place.

So, that of course begs the question: What's Next? What is the next vehicle I'd like to get once the truck is paid off? Well, my hope is that I can go 6-12 months of no payments and build up a bit of a reserve before shopping around for a new vehicle. The truth is, I'll most likely be out at the car lot the day after it's paid off. I am too impatient and too excited to get a new vehicle to wait a year.

Now, my thinking is that my next vehicle will be a less expensive, gas-friendly four-door car. I already have a truck for when I need it, so I don't see the need to buy another one (though I have to admit the new Rams with the Rambox sure look good!).

I first thought about getting something like an Aveo. Yes, I know that is a long way from the Ram, but I'm thinking I could finance that for about two years, three at the most, and then pass it off onto Tyler and get another car. I'm not sure about that though.

I've also thought about getting a Dodge Caliber. Shan thinks they are ugly, but I like 'em. And, you can one pretty well loaded out for under $25k. That's a little higher than I want to pay, but that might be worth it.

Then again, if had to choose a 4-door car that was within my overall budget, I just might pick the Charger. Granted, the top-end model is about $45000 or so, but I'd be looking for something just above base model, I think. The problem with that is the monthly payments. I'm not happy with the payments I have now, so I sure don't want HIGHER ones (or even the same ones - ugh!).

Who knows what I'll actually end up searching for once the magical day arrives, and I know it's just over a year away, but the anticipation is already building. Heck, now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not even opposed to a program vehicle. I believe my 2000 Impala was even an ex-rental car, and it was a great vehicle. I only got rid of it because I needed a truck to pull the trailer... And, by next year, the new Chevy Volt will be out, plus they have a couple other new models on the slate, too.

On Saturday, our town held their annual "Chicken and Egg" festival. I took a few pics with my phone's camera:

You know, I never really wanted a phone that did anything other than be a phone. But, now that I have a SmartPhone, I have to say, having a device with so many features all in one place is VERY handy! I know, for a tech guy, I can be a bit stubborn when it comes to adopting some technologies. Yeah, yeah, I'm old school sometimes. What can I say?

Man, after posting '40 favorite songs,' I've heard a lot of songs that I forgot about and/or just couldn't make the list since I limited it to 40. Remember, that list was not a "top 40" but just a list of 40 songs. I suppose I should try a 'top 40' sometime... Ya just never know...

Tyler got a new phone on Saturday - a Samsung Rant. It's very cool, and he really likes the slide-out keyboard. We went to the Sprint Store and they were out of them, so we went to Best Buy instead. I still had a couple gift cards from my rewards package on ePoll, so I used those to pay for the phone. He got his phone for free! How cool is that?

And, hey, if you're not following me on Twitter, well, then, you're in good company. I don't really update that anyway. :-)

I have no idea

Seriously, I have no idea where this post is going. You're welcome to come along for the ride.

My latest video game addiction is "DiceWars:"

It's like Risk, but everything is determined by rolls of dice. Yeah, it's dorky, but it's fun anyway. Or maybe challenging is the better word. In any case, it's my latest Internet Attention Deficit Disorder manifestation.

My other Internet-based distraction lately is woot.com. Woot has one item for sale each day, and once they run out, it's over. You have to check in early or else miss out on most things. Sometimes they have cool things and other days they have junk no one wanted to begin with. It's always worth stopping by, if you can remember to do so. Of course, if I really cared that much, it would be one of my home page tabs, right?

There's a new computer store in town here. I haven't been to it as of yet, mainly because it looks like it's not really open for business. It is, of course, but it looks like the same run-down shop that was there before. And, there is something else... The shop has a bay window, and in the bay window is a mattress. Seriously. I'm not sure I feel comfortable going into a store that has a mattress in the front window. There's just something not right there. It'll be interesting to see how the store lasts. Prescott has maybe 4300 people total. Hope has at least twice that many and every computer shop to pop up there has failed except one that I can think of. It's a tough market to crack because you have to have enough business to pay the rent and pay your own bills, buy food, etc. As much as I would love to open my shop, I just don't see it being feasible. Then again, I have been wrong about such things many times before.

Wow, hey! The Indians won tonight! If you have not been following along with what the Tribe has been up to this season, well, they are in dead last place in the American League. It's a lot like watching the Indians of the 80's. Maybe they'll remake "Major League" and give the Indians a boost.... Oh well, at least we're not the Washington Nationals...

Do 'stickers' grow in places other than the South? There is this thorny grass (probably what's called 'crab grass') that releases these little roundish hard 'stickers' that get on and in everything, and when you step on one with your bare foot, you might as well call the roofer because you are going through! Talk about pain! Well, our vacuum cleaner got quite a workout today. You know you feel good about your carpet when you can walk across it with bare feet and not worry about stepping on stickers. Man, I hate those things.

I am having one heck of a baseball-related year this year! We went to the Rangers game for my birthday, then in a couple weeks, I am going to the Indians-Cubs game in Chicago at Wrigley, and a couple weeks after that, we will be in NYC for the Yankees game! Talk about FRIGGIN AWESOME!!

Speaking of awesome, how about those Penguins!? 6-2 tonight!? Whoa buddy! Malkin is on fire, and Crosby is not far behind him. Holy cow! It would be awesome to have the Penguins take the Stanley Cup in the same year the Steelers got the Super Bowl! I don't see any way the Pirates could grab the World Series. I guess anything could happen. I would love to see an Indians-Pirates World Series. That would be cool... Maybe someday in my lifetime...

We've been watching the Super Regionals NCAA Women's Softball on and off during the weekend. Man, there have been some very good games! I am not necessarily a softball fan, but these girls can really rip the ball and play some amazing defense! If you're not watching, you should try and check 'em out.

I'm sick of hearing about Brett Favre. I just wish he would have retired the first time he said he was. He would have gone out at the top of things and not looked like the aging buffoon his circus has turned into. I hope all athletes are watching and paying attention because he is giving a clinic on how NOT to retire from a professional sports career.

Thanks for stopping by during your Memorial Day weekend! Be sure to take a moment or two and remember just why we celebrate this holiday to begin with... There are men and women who have given their lives so that we can do things like blog, keep up with friends on FaceBook, go to church where we want, play outside... Thank you, servicemen and service women! Your sacrifice is appreciated here each and every single day I wake up as free American.

Gotta have Faith..er uh..Stef! The Apple iRack...

"You're Hired!" Stefani heard those words tonight on "The Apprentice!" I was kinda surprised because I thought James was Trump's 'pet.' Shan, on the other hand, knew the whole time that Stefani was "the one." Guess Stef will be going to the Caribbean (funny how both women chose the island, while the guys chose Atlanta).

I checked out the 'stuff' up for auction. Have you seen it? You can tell it's for charity, because most of this 'stuff' wouldn't fetch a dime otherwise.... Anyway, see for yourself: Apprentice Auction.

Surya's comment about Sanjaya was.....expected. In fact, when he first came out, Shan and I said something about him and Sanjie....

I know the "title" of my blog is "Just Popped in My Head," and why I didn't make the address match the title is something I have wondered myself many times. As it turns out, a few folks have been searching for this site by typing the 'just' and not finding it... So, I did what anyone who was trying to suck more people into the space between his ears would do - I created a new site that directs people to this one! :-) Yeah, yeah, self-serving, I know, I know... What can I say?

Have you ever dropped what you were doing to go help someone? Have you done this without stopping to think about what you were wearing or where you were going? Today was Shan's Sister's baby shower at the church. After church, several folks helped set up for party and then I went home.

Around the time for the party to be over, Shan called the house and Tyler answered. This is what *I* was told: "Mimi is sick and you need to go to the church to drive her home. And they want you to bring your truck to help carry stuff." Now, it didn't make sense that I would going to pick up my mother, since her car was there and Shan and/or Shan's mom could drive the car back... I understood the need for a truck for hauling.... I happened to have also been in the middle of a very high, hot pursuit in Need for Speed.... I had 17 cops chasing my tail, for crying out loud! :-) Oh, did I mention that after church and set-up, I had come home to change my clothes? And, did I further mention that I wore these 'very casual' clothes back up to the church?

I looked like I had just woke up from a nap. I figured since I was helping to haul stuff, everyone but family would be gone..... WRONG! But, I decided the heck with it - it was to late to do much about it anyway.... I had on my new 'long' shorts and a T-shirt that has a picture of the Grim Reaper and it says "Smoking is Cool." The point of the shirt is that death thinks smoking is cool... Of course death would, right? So, I am in church with a shirt that reads "smoking is cool...." Look, no matter what the 'message' of the shirt is, really, one should stop and think before wearing a shirt to church that seems to be encouraging smoking.... Not my brightest moment.... Not the dumbest either, mind you, but certainly not the brightest...

As it turns out, Mimi had already driven HERSELF home because she was sick. Something got lost in translation, it seems....

I did want to mention that I received a birthday card from my Aunt (well, a card from each Aunt, really). One of the cards told me NOT to behave myself on my birthday, and the other centered on tools...well, getting hammered and nailed, to be specific.... You'd think they were trying to tell me something....

I do have one beef I'd like to share (hmm, probably not the best way to say that after the last section, huh?) - Why is it that many (dare I say most) handicapped drivers drive like the CAR is handicapped!?!? Look, I understand that someone with a handicap plate suffers from whatever ailment that rightfully justifies their handicapped status. No problem. But, THEY are handicapped, not the car they are driving!? Is there some law I am not aware of that says "Handicapped drivers must disobey all speed limit signs, instead driving no mare than 10% of the posted speed????" I ended up behind such a person on the way back up to the church... I kept expecting the person (who was so short, I could not tell if it was a man or a woman driving) in front of me to pull over and let me pass by.... Nope... Just keep on moving (and I use the term VERY loosely here), blocking my path....

Maybe we need special stickers for the plates, so the rest of the world knows instantly if the driver AND car are handicapped, or just the driver.....

Dad sent us pictures of an attack that happened very close to where he works in Iraq. As it turns out, the insurgents are getting better and better weapons, but aren't really focused on just how to USE those weapons....

Now look, I know this is serious stuff, but COME ON, how can anyone just let this next photo go without SOME kind of comment??? :-) "Are we sure the explosion came from the OUTSIDE of the building???" Or, maybe, "Do NOT go in there! Phew!!" Maybe even, "You can drink the water in Iraq, but watch out for those burritos!!"

And, Bo and Luke have joined the fight:

Have you seen the new Apple iRack!? What will they think of next?
