A guy I work with, well his significant other, has horses and he's learned a great deal about them and how they think and react. For example, I didn't know that they're "prey" animals and so can't be approached head-on or looked in the eye directly. He sayd that like other animals positive reinforcement with food and praise is a very effective tool.
